Meet the artists selected for the second stage of the Horbowy International Glass Competition.

A seven-member jury of glass designers, theoreticians and educators from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine and the United States selected 52 works of glass art from around the world. The works selected for the second stage will be presented to the public in two competition exhibitions in 2023.

106 artists applied in the first edition of the Competition. 52 participants from 13 countries qualified for the second stage of the Competition. The laureates of the Horbowy International Glass Competition will be announced by the Jury at the opening of the first exhibition at the the Giant Mountains Museum in Jelenia Góra on th 30th of June 2023.

In addition to organizing an exhibition of the awarded works and publishing a catalogue, the organizers, with the support of the Marshal of the Lower Silesian Region, will present the competition winners with the following prizes:

  • the Lower Silesian Main Prize PLN 25,000 gross,
  • the award of the Culture and Art Centre in Wrocław participation in the Glass Art Workshop and Symposium of the e-Glass Festival,
  • the award of the Rector of the Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław provision of a minimum two-week residency at Pilchuck Glass School,
  • the award of the Giant Mountains Museum in Jelenia Góra workshops at the Glass Laboratory,
  • the award of the Museum of Glass in Lviv participation in the International Blown Glass Symposium in Lviv.

The idea for the Competition was developed by Igor Wójcik from the Culture and Art Centre in Wrocław and Mariusz Łabiński, PhD, from the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław, in cooperation with the Giant Mountains Museum in Jelenia Góra. The event aims to promote art glass and glass-related design as a discipline of particular importance to the traditions of Wrocław and Lower Silesia.

The patron of the competition is Professor Zbigniew Horbowy – a prominent artist and designer, long-standing rector of the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, a reformer of Polish art glass who associated his entire creative life with the Lower Silesia region. In this way, the organizers wish to build a bridge between the history and the future of this unique field of art.

Cezary Przybylski, Marshal of the Lower Silesia Region, has assumed honorary patronage of the event. The project accompanied the global celebration of the United Nations International Year of Glass 2022.
