Interdepartmental Unit - Department of History of Art and Philosophy

The Department of History of Art and Philosophy is engaged in scientific research and the education of students in the broadly defined humanities. Employees of the Department, representing the most important areas of contemporary humanities, conduct classes for students of all faculties of the Academy from the first to the fifth year of study. Classes, adapted to the specifics of each field of study, are conducted in the form of lectures, exercises, seminars and conversation classes, while individual topics are illustrated with rich iconographic material (slide and film projections). The program of classes is also enriched by presentations of originals of outstanding works of art (historical and contemporary), with which students can get acquainted during visits to museums or exhibitions organized by various art institutions.
Students acquire knowledge in the field of art history (from the most ancient art to the most recent artistic phenomena and attitudes), they also become acquainted with the history of philosophy, especially issues related to aesthetics (from antiquity to contemporary aesthetic concepts and controversies), art criticism, and broadly understood issues of theory and history of culture and civilization. The course program is directed both at imparting to students specialized knowledge in particular fields, and at shaping and developing their intellectual potential and self-awareness. The overriding goal of general humanistic education at an art university is to give students the opportunity to become full-fledged, conscious participants and co-creators of contemporary art and culture.
