OPIS ZAJĘĆ

Following Lines and Traces: Wandering as a Critical Making Practice

This course concentrates on providing students with a deeper understanding of creative practices that rely upon the emergent forms of knowing. How and what does it mean to make things as part of a world of materials, persons and places? How can theorizing and thinking through drawing (lines) help us understand how to make and create things (drawings, buildings, designs and relationships…) critically? We will address these artistic as well as philosophical and ethical questions together through individual and group drawing exercises which will incorporate embroidery, stitching and text, as well as mark-making and classical methods of representation and illustration, as well as other methods to develop perception. This will be structured through readings and group discussion and excursions, reinforced and culminated by final (exhibition-ready) individual research projects. How does voluntary and involuntary memory help us as artists, designers, architects, photographers, and other makers? This course will draw upon two key texts. One by the anthropologist, Tim Ingold Lines:A Brief History and the artist and the other by the painter, Paul Klee's, the Thinking Eye.

BIO ARTYSTKI

Michele Feder-Nadoff has an MFA and BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (USA) and a doctorate in Anthropology from El Colegio de Michoacán (Mexico). Her doctoral project Body of Knowledge -between praxis and theory- The Agency of the Artisan and their Craft: Towards and Anthropology of Making was based in long-term apprentice-ship based research in the mestizo copper-smithing community of Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán initiated in 1997. Feder-Nadoff's artistic work, as well as anthropological research concentrates on the study of the onto-epistemological processes of "making" and skilled practice. Her work has included a broad array of processes and techniques from embroidery to lost-wax casting, video, sound and performance. In 2013 Brauer Museum of Art (USA) and Rockford Art Museum hosted career retrospectives. Feder-Nadoff lives and works in Mexico where she relocated for a Fulbright fellowship and research in 2010-2011 followed by her doctoral study (2012-2017).

Zajęcia w Pracowni Profesora Wizytującego organizowane są w ramach projektu: „Umiędzynarodowienie kształcenia, kompetentna kadra i nowoczesne zarządzanie gwarancją jakości i międzynarodowej obecności Akademii Sztuk Pięknych we Wrocławiu" współfinansowanego przez Unię Europejską ze środków Europejskiego Funduszu Społecznego.
