Stage Design (long-cycle Master's studies, 5-year course)

In the academic year 2011/12, the Department of Stage Design was established at the Faculty of Interior Architecture and Design and a new field of study was launched. The creation of the Department allows students to pursue their own mode of education as theater, film and puppet stage designers. Stage Design is one of the fields related to artistic disciplines that can be studied at a public university as a full-time student, as a second field without paying fees.

The curriculum for full-time Master’s studies is based on two basic groups of course units - fundamental courses and major courses, complemented by the humanities and complementary instruction. Our academy is the only higher education institution in Poland to launch 5-year long-cycle Master's studies. We teach all forms of scenography- theater, film, puppet, visual. We invite outstanding creatives to conduct workshops - set designers, costume designers, cinematographers and directors.

As a result of the agreement between the Rectors of three artistic higher education institutions in Wrocław: the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wroclaw, AST National Academy of Theatre Arts in Krakow - Faculty in Wrocław, and the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, cooperation was established in the field of production of performances produced by the Academy of Theater Arts, which gives students the opportunity to use the offered spectrum of production possibilities in a multi-layered way.

Recognizing the need to expand joint activities to include the possibility of producing films, the three artistic higher education institutions in Wrocław expressed their will to cooperate with Wroclaw Film School Mastershot. The agreement opens up new opportunities for students of the Department of Stage Design to learn another specificity of the profession - film set design. The Film Stage Design Studio at the Stage Design Department creates opportunities for student projects in the field of feature, short, television and documentary films.

We have our own studio space, THEATER 313, where we can create theater miniatures and our own performances.

Our students create sets for AST acting and puppetry diplomas, as well as semester short pieces at the AST Faculty of Directing. They have participated twice in the Prague Quadriennial of Performance Design and Space and presented their works during nationwide exhibitions and theater festivals, including: in Opole, Poznań, Kraków and others. We also cooperate with professional theaters in Poland.

Since the 2021/2022 academic year, we have launched an annual National Competition for the Best Stage Design Diplomas, which we organize in cooperation with the Henryk Tomaszewski Museum of Theater (a branch of the Wrocław City Museum).
